Managing large music collections often requires batch updating ID3 tags—whether you need to standardize an album artist name, update a year across multiple tracks, or clear out unwanted comments. Zortam’s Change/Clear/Replace Mp3 Tags tool lets you modify or remove metadata fields across multiple files in a single pass.
1. How String Replacement Works
The Replace tool supports both full field overwrites and targeted substring replacements using a simple backslash (\) divider syntax:
- Replace Entire Field: Enter new text into the input field and check the corresponding box. This overwrites the existing tag entirely across all selected files.
- Replace Specific Text (Substring Search & Replace): Use the backslash separator syntax:
Old Text\New Text.- Example: Typing
Bobby\Roywill find every instance of “Bobby” in that tag and change it to “Roy” (e.g., “Featuring Bobby” becomes “Featuring Roy”).
- Example: Typing
- Clear/Delete Field: Check the field’s checkbox while leaving the text box completely empty. This strips that specific metadata field from all selected files.
2. Supported ID3 Tag Fields
You can target any combination of the following metadata fields simultaneously:
| Category | Supported Tag Fields |
|---|---|
| Core Track Info | Artist, Album, Album Artist, Genre, Year, Track Number |
| Credits & Contacts | Composer, Lyricist, Original Artist, Conductor, Publisher, Copyright, URL |
| Additional Details | Comment, Encoded By |
3. Step-by-Step Instructions
- Select the audio files you wish to edit in the main library list.
- Open the Change/Clear/Replace Mp3 Tags dialog from the menu or context menu.
- Type the desired text into the input box next to the field you want to modify.
- Check the checkbox at the far right of that field line to enable the update for that specific tag.
- Repeat for any other fields you want to update simultaneously.
- Click OK to process all selected tracks.
Pro Tip: To clean up unnecessary clutter across your entire library, leave the text boxes for Comment or Encoded By blank and check their respective boxes to clear those tags in batch mode!
